The Vallisaari History Trail is NEMO architect's co-founder Maria Klemetti Laine's diploma thesis for the Faculty of Architecture at University of Oulu. The thesis can be downloaded here.
Vallisaari is located outside of Helsinki, next to Suomenlinna, an old fortress island that has been in military use for hundreds of years and closed to the public until spring 2016.
The project is based on the rich history of Vallisaari and its built heritage and stories. The island has been divided into different themed areas, each with its own unique stories, which the trail passes through. The exhibition architecture and environmental art methods were used to create a compelling experience for visitors, showcasing the island's history and the dramaturgy of the path.
The aim was to create an exhibition concept where visitors do not see the installations as mere objects, but as tools to see the environment from a new perspective.
